I make work that explores the cadence of perception. I am interested in how memories and experiences affect our view of even the most mundane occurrences. Exploring degrees of realism and abstraction, I am fascinated by multiple representations of the same subject. My most recent works explore this within the context of the natural world. Nature is my safe place - throughout my life it has been a consistent respite for me. Further investigating the natural world in my work, to me, has been like coming home.
Largely inspired by the landscape, my most intuitive work often happens after time spent outside. I investigate recurring patterns in leaves, forests, sweeping vistas, and beyond; whether they are created through human intervention or natural processes. Often working from memory, I embrace a wide variety of media to capture the essence of my experience, actively seeking out pattern, contrast, and color. Utilizing those elements, I investigate how far imagery can be pushed while still maintaining a connection to the original source, and what happens when these elements are taken out of their intended context. By reconstructing these patterns, I have found connections to the longstanding structure of the grid.
Within the grid itself, the inherent connection created by overlapping lines, in tandem with creation of separate “cells” or “blocks” to be considered individually is a paradox that I find fascinating. By warping, folding, and offsetting the grid, I am investigating what moments those interventions create. Finding connections between separate elements, I utilize collage and collage concepts to reconstruct my perception of the world. My process focuses on the physical act of layering and arranging, creating an exploratory journey I find myself coming back to again and again.
At the core of my work is the act of preservation. Preservation of memories, feelings, places, ideas - things that are, in their nature, fleeting. Preservation of the landscape represents the tangible way that I can work through the heartache of change. Experience and perception are complex and assembled, relying on the interplay between memories, emotions, and reality. My hope is the viewer steps into the fleeting moments that I aim to capture, and participates in the moment as well.
